An interview with author Elle Chardou, prolific and thoughtful author of erotic romance

I have been dying to interview Elle Chardou since I read her book Killing Time. I had a feeling that she would have a lot to say about erotic romance, wealth and the New Adult category, and I was not disappointed. She also managed to throw in some deep thoughts about violence against women, what we can really expect from romance and writing beyond "what we know".

Sit back folks; this one's really good.

Elle Chardou

You’re a prolific writer! I read the first book of your Ties That Bind series, but you’ve written a bunch of other novels and novellas. Please tell us more.

I love to explore every subject when I write. When I did the Ties That Bind series, those type of trilogies were all the rage. It was modestly successful and I still have readers who tell me that series changed their life. I did a lot of research and I wanted to explore that type of community but at the same time, I also wanted something extra involved and that is how the series morphed into a murder mystery with suspense and the addition of BDSM and the community itself.

They are a closed off community and don't really talk to outsiders so my whole job was finding out what made them tick, what kind of psychological personality is drawn to this life style and furthermore, what makes the whole bondage/domination and sadist/masochist dynamics in a relationship work. How does it work and can it be sustained long term? That was the question I kept asking myself throughout the series.

With the understanding that choosing a favorite novel is as difficult as choosing a favorite child, which novel did you enjoy writing the most?

Out From Under, which is the first part of The Lovers Duet and written under my Selene Chardou persona. I initially created a second pen name because I wanted her to be my New Adult voice, if you like. She kind of has morphed  into a whole personality of her own and she's proven much more positive than my Elle Chardou persona.

I can only say that when I wrote Out From Under, it was the combination of romance and suspense, the rock star world clashing with the violent world of Motorcycle Clubs that made it very interesting and it is still one of my favorite novels to this day. The whole duet is a favorite and I love the couple so much, I decided to an epilogue, which will be a full length story and will premiere late summer of 2014.

In general I think it's easier on a writer to "write what you know". So I've got to ask: do you lead a secret life as a dominatrix who tours with a band when you're not zipping around in a motorcycle club? If you're not, how are you delving into these worlds? And what other communities and subcultures have you explored for your work?

I would rather stretch myself as a writer to beyond what I know and write about people I would never meet and worlds I will never be a part of. The joy is I get the chance to do it but the challenge is entering these worlds and writing about them without judgment but as the character(s) I am when I approach a project. If I can nail it down and do it right then that is a huge pat on the back. I blame myself for being a Gemini. It's made me have a split personality and I am always curious about how other people live. I guess I was hardwired that way.

Sociology and psychology were favorite subjects of mine because I enjoy getting into someone else's mindset and I also enjoy exploring parts of society which are completely and unequivocally different than my own.

How did you start writing erotica?

I didn't intentionally plan to start writing erotica and the truth remains outside of The Ties That Bind Trilogy, most of my novels would be considered erotic romance. The plot is definitely the most important thing to me outside of character development and although there are sexy times in all my novels, I try to limit them to maybe three or four occasions (usually no more than five). I don't ever want someone to complain my novels are just sex and I believe less is more. You can make a novel very sexy without the characters going at it every five minutes. (Interviewer's note: since I have had readers tell me that they wanted to hit their heads on desks after one too many plotless books filled with scene after scene of explicit sex, I agree!)

How has erotic romance changed over the last few decades? I feel like it used to be used more as a tool to tell the story; now in many ways it *is* the story.

That is the problem I have with a lot of erotica and erotic romance in general. I don't want sex to be the story. It is a vehicle I use to show how close a couple has become and how they respond to one another, but I also believe there should be a solid plot that the reader can become engrossed and really be reeled in by. Sex is a facet of my novels but it is *never* the center of my novels.

The Flavor of the Month in erotic romance seems to be Bondage, Domination, Sadism and Masochism (BDSM). For me, the interesting question that those themes present is one of consent. How do you straddle the line between writing about inflicting pain and not writing about sexual assault?

It's easy because as a woman, and knowing the statistics of how many women actually report sexual assault versus how many women are sexually assaulted in their lifetime is skewed. I have been the victim of sexual assault and I have no wish to explore that in my work. I understand the need for dark erotica (ie: when dubious consent by the female is given in terms of sex) but I won't write it myself. I think a woman should always have the ability to say "no" to sex, whether it involves an acquaintance or whether she is in a relationship. I will never explore dubious consent in my work because I find no joy in writing about a woman who has been "tricked" into having sex and/or having he body violated as a means of sexual titillation for the reader.

There are authors who do this kind of work quite well and I will leave it up to them to explore the dark side of sexuality. It's just not for me.

Your romantic interest in Killing Time, in addition to being a BDSM “leader”, is also fabulously wealthy. What is about super-wealthy heroes these days? And I don’t just mean in BDSM.

I think it is a fantasy for most women to be swept off their feet by an alpha male who happens to have money. Even books that aren't about BDSM but a man and a woman, you notice how most of the men tend to be wealthy and have money. I flipped the tables on this whole notion with my One More Night Trilogy. The heroine is a Norwegian heiress who will inherit billions from the empire her grandfather and mother created. She falls for a rock star and although he has lots of money, the amount she has dwarfs what he is worth.

With so many women working and many of them earning more than their husbands, I thought this would be an interesting theme to explore. It is true, these women aren't heiresses but how does a man handle the situation when his wife has a net worth more than his? It causes problems but you don't get to see it until after their happily ever after and when I write about each character in the band in Scarlet Fever Series. Rock My Heart continues the journey of Kasper "Kaz" Gillian and Sydney "Syd" Landvik and that is when they start to run into issues. I think the story is realistic because during the trilogy, they weren't given any real trials and tribulations but they were in Rock My Heart

Killing Time has a couple of interesting family dynamics: Aurelie is trying to find her sister Tresor’s killer, but to do that she has to get to know Tresor’s lover Rory and his twin brother Severin. Meanwhile, she’s already connected to the twins through her fiance Grey and his brother Jason. With all of the sibling pairs, it’s hard to tell at times whether they’re working for or against each other. Was that a conscious choice on your part?

Yes, it was because I wanted the reader to see how she becomes so involved in this whole world of deviant behavior, or what she considers deviant, she almost loses sight as to what brought her in this whole world in the first place and that was to find out who murdered her sister. The whole Trilogy is my Clockwork Orange if you like. It is meant to be a mind screw and play with the reader.

I wanted the reader to leave the series thinking how far they would go to find out who murdered a family member and if they could be as bold and fearless as this woman who thought she had everything under control only to lose that dynamic and be under the control of someone else. Throughout the whole series, I wanted the reader to see how much of a backbone Aurelie has and how she continues to be a strong woman, even when she think she has surrendered all her power. Killing Me Softly was my favorite novel to write in the series because I love how she takes back her power and decides if she is going to live this life style, it will be under her terms and no one else's, not even the man who becomes her husband.

A number of your titles are marketed as New Adult, which I think is starting to mean different things to different people. What does it mean to you?

To me, it only has to do with the age of the characters. The Ties That Bind Trilogy deals with characters in their 30s. The next two novels I am writing (Deadly Seduction, which comes out on Dec. 23rd and Love TKO, which premieres in early February of 2014 are both contemporary romances with romantic suspense elements) and neither are marketed as New Adult because all the characters are older than 25.

I do like New Adult and think it is a great genre but at the same time, I would like to explore characters who are a little older and have lived life. I will be putting out some NA titles in 2014 but at the same time, I want to remain the same dynamic writer who can write about characters of all ages and I don't just want to be known as an NA writer because at this point, I'm not sure if it's a fad or will be a long lasting category.

All the stories are so similar right now, it just seems the characters' names change but it always seems to be about a broken woman and a broken man and how they "heal" one another. I come from the school of thought that we cannot change people. True change can only happen from within and so I avoid this whole line of thinking at all costs. My characters aren't about changing one another but how a relationship can make it possible for a person to self-analyze what is wrong with them and want to become a better person for their partner.

I don't like the theme of someone fixing someone else because it isn't realistic. Yes, it's fiction but the only way we, as human beings, change is if we want to be better. Not for someone else but because we truly want to be a better person for our own health. That radiates to the people around us but no one can heal us. We have the ability to heal and change ourselves but not anyone else.

Thank you so much for chatting with me!

Even a Scrooge can make use of Christmas

I'm on Monique McDonell's blog today, talking about "the holidays". Even though I'm a little bit of a Scrooge around the holidays- what can I say? All those joyous spots on television telling me how happy I'm going to be once I buy something have the opposite of the intended effect- sometimes you simply cannot pass up the opportunity afforded by an international holiday. The sudden disappearances...the possibilities for reunions...and, regardless, the anxiety around gathering with old and new acquaintances: if those don't make for built-in drama and/or opportunities to move your story forward, I don't know what does.

Let's talk about... time management

November was a mixed bag for me. I was pretty ill for most of it (and still am), so there was no way I was going to finish my fifth book that month.

However, I did get into the habit of writing one thousand words per day (that seems to be my Goldilocks amount) AND I figured out how to significantly streamline my time on my computer. Check out my tips on my friend Thea Atkinson's blog for more, but be warned- I'm not telling you anything new. Clean out your inbox, use your calendar and task list, and use lists wherever you can to streamline. What might be a little different: I'm a big fan of bookmarks and I cannot say enough about how great Instapaper is.

We have only so much time. First step: decide how we want to spend it.

Why should you listen to me? Because using these tips has allowed me to spend much less time on my computer than I did before, and I think freeing up that time is a big part of why I'm writing so much more consistently than I was before.

Please enjoy those tips while I make myself yet more tea and toast...

First she has a reunion with Colin Lambert, the boy she was in love with during high school. Strange things happen in the strange place where Clara has landed and she and her lover are constrained to find out what happened to the mystery woman. EXCERPT– Rendezvous With Hymera

The horizon stretched boundless in front of her – a décor of shape and color, oscillating in a slow but permanent transformation under the calm, indulgent blue of a clear sky. As the car moved through the smoky background of the mountains, the road became more and more sinuous, the curves tighter and more frequent.
In the four hours of her journey, the June landscape gradually changed; with the increasing altitude, the green, smooth vastness of plain – punctuated by the intense yellow of a few sunflower islands – gave way to an abundance of mountainous vegetation beyond which wooded ridges filled the view, flirting to the peaks with waves of fog and snow. At that point, a sort of finis mundi, the sky and the misty crests seemed to merge into a primordial entity.
Looks like not only Hell, but Paradise also is on Earth, thought Clara, while from the audio system inside the car came the perfectly modulated notes of Alphaville’s Forever Young, conferring a nostalgic vibration to the ambiance. Stimulated by the evocative music, by the picturesque and strange beauty of the scenery, a mixture of nameless emotions gravitated in her soul. For in such moments of melancholy and reverie, one’s spirit yearns for an undefined something, in permanent search and aspiration to a fulfillment whose road or purpose almost always remain inexpressible.
Slumped on the passenger seat, which had been adjusted back as a concession to his comfort, Tony was snoring gently with his golden fur caressed by the sunlight. In the first half hour on the road, he had stood with his head out the window, tongue waving, fascinated by the sights, but even the huge energy reserves of a dog know limits.
Clara affectionately ruffled his hairy ears; then, concentrating on the route, took a slight curve, marked with a traffic sign. On the right side of the road, visibility was limited by a rocky slope, somewhat oppressive and apparently interminable. On the left, beyond the edge of a parapet stood a kind of valley, with a few huts straying in an abyss of vegetation.
After yet another curve to the right, partially hidden by the mountain and a clump of shrubs seemingly disposed in an artistic arrangement, Clara discovered a place which her imagination immediately associated with a mirror-portal to one of Monet’s impressionist paintings. A small lake, crystal clear, sprinkled with water lilies, lazily undulating over the illusions of clouds reflected in the waters. Near the shore, a small boat, archaic-looking, swayed fluidly, carried by the gentle breeze. A pretty hedge flanked the right half; on the opposite side, along shore, the exotic landscape was balanced by the rustic touch of a few cottages.
Taking advantage of the extremely light traffic, Clara slowed down and stopped on the verge of the road.
From there, fascinated by the strange charm and static grandeur of that place, she contemplated the panorama. Confused thoughts of her own existence – so often restless and not as stable as she wanted – dripped a vague nostalgia in her soul. And suddenly, boosted perhaps by the image of the path that detached itself from the main road to reach the small paradise, she made up her mind.
The end of the road was divided in two alleys, one of which ended in a small parking lot and the other, paved with an interesting gravel and marble mosaic, meandered asymmetrically in front of each cottage.
Clara got out of the car and opened the passenger door for Tony. Still heavy with sleep, the dog left the seat lazily and, for a few moments, sniffed the new surroundings. Then he stretched, shaking himself, extending his paws and tail; the ritual ended with a guttural groan and a yawn of epic proportions, during which he displayed a crocodile dentition; now, a preliminary examination of the area could begin.
The first of the seven cottages was the largest, a two-story building, having several windows and a sign that announced simply: ROSE UNIVERSAL, and below: COTTAGES FOR RENT.
The rest of the cottages were two-storied as well, but smaller, built along the shore, at distances that ensured a minimum of discretion and privacy. For an aboriginal who landed here straight from the noise and infernal pollution specific to big cities, the impression of heavenly oasis was also emphasized by an almost tangible quiet, in which the stylized solfeggios of unseen birds occasionally entwined.
Clara took off her sunshades, as the strong light was softened through a network of shadows cast by the cottages and trees surrounding them. Breathing in deeply the fragrant air, she strolled to the main building.
“Let’s go inside,” she said, addressing Tony, who was frolicking around her, chasing a butterfly.
However, before they got to the door, it opened and an old woman made her appearance. She was wearing a green dress, and had a shawl on her shoulders. Her curly grey hair was cut short, and from behind the glasses resting on her nose, a pair of very sharp eyes watched Clara.
“Hello. Are you Mrs. Rose?”
For a moment, the woman analyzed her curiously.
“Depends,” she finally answered. “If you wanna sell me something, advertise something or charge me for something, you’ve got the wrong address,” she continued brusquely and somewhat grumpily.
Clara laughed, surprised and amused.
“No, actually I came to find peace and quiet. Do you have a vacant cottage?”
“Yes. If you want to rent one, you’re in the right place. I’m Rose,” said the woman, with the same sharp but now jovial tone, this time warmed with a smile. “Cute mutt you got here,” she remarked, scratching Tony’s ears; the dog collapsed ecstatically at her feet, bracing his huge paws on her shoes.
“Thank you, we think so, too. His name is Tony. Quite a place you have here!” she said admiringly. “I was just thinking it’s like a miniature version of Eden.”
“Yeah... And the least populated it is, the better! Although that’s not so good for business. Oh, well...Come in!”
The big cottage was, according to the sign above, a universal store, where you could find anything, from food to needles. The merchandise was arranged on shelves, and along the right wall was a massive walnut desk, a chair and a small portable TV.
“You’re well supplied,” remarked the young woman. “But who buys all this stuff?”
“There’s a small village about four or five miles from here. All the folks there come to me for shopping, and I use somebody from the metropolis for supplies. It’s only thirty miles to the city, but I hate all that dust and crowds, where you always bump into weirdoes on the street,” said Rose. “For now, I’ve got only two cottages occupied; in one of them live Marie and Robert Axel and in the other one stays Mr. Garcia. The Axels both work in the city, and the old man, a fanatical botanist, wanders all day long through the wilderness searching for unusual plants. The funny thing is he often gathers the most common weeds,” she added, as if to herself. “Oh, and other times he sits on the shore or floats in the boat and pretends to fish.”
“Why do you say he pretends?”
“Cause I never saw any fish caught by him.”
While speaking, Rose took out a register book from a desk drawer. After she informed Clara of the renting fee, the latter decided to stay a month for starters.
“Got an ID? I have to know who I’m hosting, don’t I?”
Clara rummaged through her bag and gave the old lady her passport and the required money.
“Clara DeVine,” read Rose, noting the data in the register, then she analyzed her skeptically over the top of her glasses. “You’re twenty-six?” she asked incredulously. “I wouldn’t have granted you more than eighteen.”
“Thanks for the compliment,” replied the young woman, smiling, although the tone of Rose’s remark wasn’t necessarily flattering.
“Sign here, please, and I’ll show you to your temporary residence.”
After she signed, Clara followed her outside. Her cottage, the third in line, was placed at a convenient distance from the others. It was roomy enough, with a small garden in the back, surrounded by a colorful hedge. Near the back entry, a table and two chairs that appeared to have been woven from twigs supplemented the decor.
Inside was dark, pleasantly cool, and the air carried an intimate and unmistakable fragrance of freshly polished wood. The cottage consisted of a living area, simply furnished with a massive couch, a coffee table and, in the opposite corner, a TV incorporated in a small bookcase; on its shelves were scattered a few books and magazines.
On the left, next to the couch, a staircase led up to the bedroom, and on the right, there was a crescent-shaped bar. Behind it was a limited a kind of kitchenette. In the center of the living area, on the polished walnut floor, reigned a unique-looking rug, manufactured, in all appearance, from what had once been an enormous bear.
When Clara headed to the stairs for an inspection of the upper floor, Tony remained to smell the bear fur, intrigued and cautious. Although he was an impressively built Golden Retriever, courage wasn’t his strong suit, and the nickname Brave heart, with which his mistress sometimes teased him, was an obscure mystery for him.
The bedroom, she noted with delight, was furnished as simple as the rest: a huge bed, hedonistic-looking, a nightstand on each side of it, a closet and a small desk in a corner. In the opposite corner, a door led to the bathroom.
During this inspection, Rose remained in the living area with Tony. When Clara descended the stairs, the old lady raised her eyebrows and watched her over the top of her glasses.
“Comments?”
“I like it!” exclaimed Clara excitedly. “It’s exactly what I wanted.”
“Well, then, I’ll leave you to get settled. If you need anything, you know where to find me.”
“Thanks, Mrs. Rose,” she said, as the old woman headed to the exit. Once she reached the door, Rose turned around.
“I hope Tony’s got impeccable… hygienic manners!”
“Definitely. He’s extremely well educated and clean. We won’t cause any trouble, I promise.”
“All right, then. Enjoy your stay!”
Left only with Tony, Clara remembered her travel bag, which she had left in the trunk of her car, and returned to the parking lot to recover it. Although initially she had intended to stay for a few days in one of the metropolis’ comfortable hotels, she didn’t regret in the least the decision to stay a while in this isolated paradise. Getting back to the refuge of shadows and coolness of the cottage, she climbed the stairs loaded with luggage and entered the bedroom, where Tony already seemed to feel at home.
The first things she unpacked were the plastic bowl especially imprinted with the spoiled quadruped’s name, his food, the small bag containing her cosmetic products and a bathrobe. And because a small amount of discipline never hurts, the dog had to eat on the veranda. With this matter solved, the young woman decided it was time to take care of herself, as she felt the passive fatigue of the road in every muscle. Not having an established schedule or a certain destination in mind, she had started her journey late, in her own comfortable rhythm, which she preferred. Although it was just past 7 p.m., after she relaxed, taking a long and very hot shower, the monotonous humming of insects and the conifers’ fragrance were the last things she noticed before falling asleep, with Tony curled on a rug near the bed.

Shunned by a family that doesn't understand him, demigod Lenka Tahile aka "Swindle" is a complete loner and he likes it that way. Then he meets the hero, Ace Remedy, the brother of an infamous demigod Prince, and his life goes from bad to worse. Ace is loud, rude, and disruptive to his peaceful existence in every way. He's also hilarious and daring, and Swindle ends up finding a friend just when he thought he'd never have another.

But little does he know, becoming friends with Ace was all part of the Fates' plan. Now his past is slowly coming back to haunt him and there's nothing he can do to stop it. Nothing but try not to bring to light the lost love, the failed hopes, and the cursed existence that he would kill to keep in the dark.

2. "Swindle" is Lenka's celestial name. He is a son of Hermes. Figure it out.

EXCERPT

He sits in front of me and brings me to his chest. Our flesh is hot and sticky where it touches and I can’t stop the ache between my legs. His breathing is ragged and he tightens his grip on the back of my head as he tries to slow it. I am hurt or angry or frustrated, but I don’t know which. He runs his hands along my entire body and I push against him, needing him and not knowing how to accept his denial.
‘I want you, Nora. I have wanted you since I saw you. You are gorgeous. However, there are secrets that... Please understand, the steps that you want to take will reveal things. This cannot end well for either of us. I don’t want to make you suffer, but I am fated to suffer. Don’t make me bring you with me into the darkness. I can’t bear to lose you.’
I sense the pain that grips him. The darkness that he speaks of sounds frightening, but I don’t feel fear when I face him and meet his eyes. ‘I will follow you anywhere. Dark or light. Stop trying to make my choices for me.’
Our lips meet again, but it is with doubt. Neither of us knows what will happen if we are to move forward, but I want to have a chance to find out.
My body is still crying out for him but now my mind is calm. I want him, but I want him when he knows that I’m ready for whatever that means. His hands touch me and his caresses are soft. We both slow our breathing and I try to let my will match his. When he pulls away, he gathers the picnic and looks at me with longing and a hunger I do not recognize. It’s not sexual, but desperate. Almost as a dying man looks in the last moments of his life.
‘In three days,’ he says, ‘I will meet you again at the church where we first met. In the meantime, I want you to look something up — and if you do not appear at the church, I’ll know that what you found changed everything.’
‘Okay,’ I say warily. I’ll do anything he asks, but his fear scares me. What kind of secrets can he possibly hold? Little right now could stop me from going to him in three days.
‘Find the name Charles Samuels. He was an Oxford student in the 1960s. And then we shall see how much of the darkness you are willing to face.’
‘I’ll look him up, but Alec, I’m going to be at the church in three days,’ I say.
‘For your sake, Nora, I hope that you’re not.’
